Sunday, May 31st, 2009Game 6 Pick – LeBron Will Rise or Cleveland Will Fall
Sunday, May 31st, 2009In the midst of LeBron’s epic triple-double to help the Cavs survive another day, is the lost (and obvious) truth about Game 5. While LeBron’s 37-14-12 stat line was impressive, what was even more inspiring was Orlando dispatching of a 22-point deficit heading in to the fourth quarter.

What is a Betting Exchange?
Wednesday, May 27th, 2009
One of the amazing things about the Internet has been the number of new opportunities it has brought to people all around the world, in any number of different industries. Even more amazing is that despite whole new markets emerging within the same industry, traditional businesses within that industry seem to not be feeling any type of pinch.
Sports betting is one of the many industries which has seen a whole new spin put on it thanks to the World Wide Web. Before the New Millennium, those wishing to bet on the outcome of any kind of sports event, from soccer to dog racing, had to do so through a bookie. Book makers made the odds and called the shots, paid out the money but always kept a portion to themselves through careful book balancing.
The introduction of the betting exchange changed all of that. Betting exchanges are the stock markets of the sports betting industry. They are web sites which connect people who want to bet on specific sports events, and facilitate the exchange of the money in question.
It?s not quite as complicated an idea as it sounds. If you have a familiarity with a peer to peer file sharing system, then you have a basic understanding of how a sports betting exchange works. In a simple example, one person wants to bet on a team to win the match. Odds are offered by the person, and if someone else wishes to take up this bet, they can do so.
Sports exchanges make their money through commission fees, rather than the bets taken by traditional bookmakers. In essence, betting exchanges eliminate the middle man.
Laying and backing:
The other big difference between a sports exchange and a bookmaker is that you can bet on a team to lose. When you use a bookmaker for a straight up bet, you are backing the team you choose. In other words, they have to win in order for you to win.
With a sports exchange, on the other hand, you can LAY a team, or bet on its loss in a game. This is essentially where the exchange part comes in. One person takes a team to win, while the other says they are going to lose.
Sports betting exchanges are also popular because of the flexibility they offer bettors when it comes to the money they have to bet and the potential return. The odds are driven solely by the market, or the number of people interested in the game itself. If no one is interested in taking a bet that is too high or where the odds are too steep, it simply gets left behind and the person proposing the bet must rethink their position.
There are a lot of sports betting exchanges available around the world, and of course all have different reputations. The ideal exchange for most bettors is one with a lot of users, as that means that the odds of someone interested in taking their proposed bet is increased.
